This striking deep burgundy Garnet appears to be a nearly black gem until bright light hits it and displays a crisp, four-ray star, sometimes 6 in very bright light, that moves across the surface of the stone. Known as asterism, this cross floats on the surface of the stone due to tiny, needle-like rutiles that are directionally lined up within the stone to reflect/project light in a perfect crossed line. Star Garnets are exceptionally rare, found in only two places in the world, and occur in only two varieties (Almandine and Pyrope).
